Things to do
A Friday visit to a fishing village
Bophut fishing village has French and European influences running through it from the expertly prepared Thai seafood to the quaint, Mediterranean, village architecture. It was once a thriving fishing community but due to the increase in tourism and the partial collapse of its traditional rickety pier the fishermen have moved on. However the traditional fishing community vibe remains with its narrow streets and stilted, wooden buildings. In keeping with the rustic vibe is the weekly market held on Fridays. Support the community and pick up some unique keepsakes at bargain prices.
Angthong National Marine Park
Angthong National Marine Park is an archipelago of which only one of its 42 islands is inhabited. This makes it the most wonderful spot for exploring and finding your own deserted beach, which is probably why it was the inspiration for Alex Garland's famous novel: 'The Beach'. This stunning protected area is home to teems of wildlife such as sea turtles and lemurs as well as stunning scenery with its juts of shining limestone cliffs bursting from the serene turquoise water. Take a boat trip out to as many islands as you can but don't miss Koh Mae and its unbelievably beautiful inland emerald lagoon.
Big Buddha
If you tell someone who has been to Ko Samui that you've just come back, the first thing they will say is: "Did you see the giant Buddha?" So you better make sure the answer is: "Yes." Fortunately, he's 12 metres tall and visible from several kilometres away so he should be hard to miss. The best times to see the Buddha in a peaceful and tranquil environment are early in the morning when Buddhists come with offerings of flowers and incense and after dark when he is artfully illuminated with golden spotlights.
