The small sovereign state of Montenegro has many tourist attractions, historical sites and landscapes to offer if you take into account its rather small area. On top of that you have stunning beaches and incredible bathing facilities to enjoy. Montenegro literally means Black Mountain but there’s nothing dark about this place, especially if you consider that the country’s seaside and the area of the Bay of Kotor are shielded from the wind through the high mountains of the hinterland; consequently this is the place to be if you want to enjoy the sun and a Mediterranean climate.
Luxury Holidays in Montenegro
Each region has its own charm. First there is the Bay of Kotor, which stretches like a fjord into the country’s interior. Here you’ll also find many monasteries and pilgrimage places to explore. The bay is also home to picturesque towns and, like many other places on the Mediterranean Sea, an abundance of islands. Dramatic landscapes and stunning architecture create an overall captivating atmosphere that will make you reach for your camera constantly.
5 Great Reasons to Holiday In Montenegro
- The before-mentioned Bay of Kotor; imagine a Norwegian fjord with a Mediterranean climate.
- Porto Montenegro, a brand-new resort complex and marina where history and modernity exist in perfect harmony.
- A tumultuous past made this country one of the most fascinating historic corners of Europe.
- The luminous white Ostrog Monastry, words cannot capture the majesty of this place, have a look yourself and you’ll understand why it’s on this list.
- People are catching on and finally see Montenegro for what it is, namely an absolute gem that is only a short flight away, so we suggest that you make the most of it before it is swamped by tourists.
Things to Do Whilst on Holiday in Montenegro
Sveti Stefan, formerly a fishing village, is one of the most unforgettable sights on the entire coast. The creamy stone, terracotta roofs of this walled village, which is in fact a fortified little island that can be reached by a causeway from the mainland, in conjunction with the turquoise colour of the water create the perfect combination.
Weather
Montenegro has a Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and relatively cold winters with heavy snowfalls inland.

Things to do
Budva Old Town
Welcome to Budva Old Town - a vibrant spot bursting with bars, boutiques and restaurants. There is plenty to do here and at 2,500 years old, Budva Old Town also offers a certain charm with its stone-built buildings, winding streets, and 15th-century citadel walls.
The town also has plenty to do for those interested in Budva’s history and culture. Visit the town museum and discover ancient artefacts, jewellery, pottery, and tools. Galleries and churches are also must-see attractions. Meanwhile a short walk along a seaside path leads to Mogren Beach.
Ostrog Monastery
Set into a sheer cliff face resting 900 metres above the Zeta valley, Ostrog Monastery is one of the most important religious sites in the Balkans, attracting up to a million visitors every year. Start at the Lower Monastery, 2 kilometres below the main shrine, and make your way up to the top. It’s not unusual to see pilgrims walking barefoot, but this is, of course, optional.
The Upper Monastery is incredibly impressive and sometimes even called ‘Sv Vasilije’s miracle’, as its construction still seems somewhat of a mystery. Here you can admire the cave-built monastery, but to enter the space where the bones of Sv Vasilije are kept, you’ll need to wear a long skirt or trousers and cover your shoulders.
Sveti Stefan
Sveti Stefan is home to a picturesque 15th century village plus pretty pebble beaches. A favourite destination for both Montenegrin people and visitors, the small islet of Sveti Stefan is the ideal place to go for a swim on the Adriatic coast, followed by a waterside meal.
The island itself is now part of the luxury Aman resort, but the view can be admired from afar, and it’s not surprising that Sveti Stefan has been named as the most photographed place in Montenegro.
