Turks & Caicos Holidays

With the third largest coral reef system in the world and boasting stunning uninhabited terrain, there is a wealth of gorgeous beaches to explore on your Turks and Caicos holiday.

This destination is comprised of two island groupings; a large tropical grouping entitled the Caicos Islands, and a smaller cluster called the Turks Islands. A tropical paradise, this popular destination can be easily accessed from the USA, with Miami just 600 miles away; only 70 minutes by plane.

A highly historic island formation, Turks and Caicos first saw Europe when Christopher Columbus made landfall in the early fifteenth century and subsequently passed through the governmental hands of Spain, France and Britain. As a result, the Islands have a rich colonial history coupled with the earlier cultural heritage of the indigenous people, the Lucayans. A visit to the National Museum in Cockburn Town on Grand Turk Island will reveal more about this fascinating story.

Turks & Caicos National Museum

Turks & Caicos National Museum

The Turks & Caicos National Museum is situated in the archipelago’s capital, Cockburn Town, is a must-visit for those looking to discover a little more about local history, culture and heritage. The building itself is known as Guinep House and is named after the large fruit tree in the front.

The primary exhibit is about the Molasses Reef Wreck, which is the oldest European shipwreck ever recovered in the western hemisphere. Another exhibit is centred on the native people of Turks & Caicos - the Tainos, displaying their indigenous tools and other artefacts. You’ll also find later items such as Spanish coins from the 1600s, historical flags, and more.

Whale Watching on Salt Cay

Whale Watching on Salt Cay

If the stunning southern cays weren’t enough to tempt you out on a boat trip, what about the promise of whale watching? In the high-season months between January and April every year, the conditions are ideal on Salt Cay to witness pods of majestic humpbacks splashing their tails and fins as they drift southwards.

For those who would rather enjoy their whale watching experience from dry land, you can also stand on the cliffs and look out to the Turks Head passage connecting the Caribbean to Hispaniola. Humpbacks aren’t the only thing you should keep your eyes peeled for - watch out for Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and even pilot whales.
