Things to do
Jibreen Castle
Built in 1675 by Imam Bil-Arab Bin Sultan, this impressive castle is one of the best-preserved in Oman. Once a centre for learning astrology, medicine, Islam, and architecture, this is now a must-visit for history buffs looking to scratch beneath the surface of Omani heritage and culture.
Make a beeline for the flagpole, which offers panoramic views over the latticed window courtyard in the heart of the keep. Be sure to stop and appreciate the distinctively painted ceilings, plus the fascinating early examples of defensive fortifications, burial chambers, and even air-conditioning.
Mutrah Souq
The Mutrah Corniche is home to Mutrah Souq - a bustling marketplace selling all manners of crafts, wares, and produce under one roof. See as local sellers and their stalls jostle for the attention of passers by and take in the lively atmosphere. Traditional textiles, jewellery, costumes, perfumes, and spices line the walls like an aladdin's cave.
Whilst most shops are equipped with card readers, you may want to bring some cash along for better deals. Navigating the souq may prove to be a little tricky, but getting lost amidst the myriad of tempting offerings is all part of the fun and not to be missed.
Wadi Shab
Wadi Shab is a true natural gem located about 1.5 hours away from Muscat and 40 minutes from the town of Sur. Ideal for hiking, the mountainous, rocky terrain is otherworldly and in itself an attraction. However, the real draw to this area of Oman is the emerald green pools of water, caves, and a hidden waterfall at the end.
Begin by hiking along the dramatic gorge but be sure to pack swimwear as cooling off in the refreshing natural pools is the best way to reward yourself for the walk. If you swim through the third pool along the hiking route, you can squeeze through a cave, hanging on if you want to see the waterfall.
